Small black beans in sweet coconut milk.

In an attempt to bridge the gap between a couple of my favorite things in life I am going to start posting some pairings of food with great music I think you should check out. I’ll try and put up an mp3 (below) for sampling but at the very least a link to where you can hear something (via myspace/band site). The dish will be connected in some way to the band/album. So here is my first installment. The band is Small Black. A Brooklyn based indie outfit that is right up my alley. Bedroom sounding production, synths, electronic drum beats, low fi, nice hooks and super dreamy. Reminds me of My Bloody Valentine (shoegaze). It seems to me anything coming out of Brooklyn these days is perfect for my ears. The first thing I thought of to pair with this band was black beans because they are, well, small and black. I wasn’t really in the mood for anything heavy or southwestern so I thought of the cool sweet coconut Southeast Asian dessert that has beans in it. Sounds weird but really it’s great. There is actually a process to making it which probably makes the beans firmer and more flavorful but I really didn’t want to spend the time for something so simple (although soaking some beans “actual work” time is a few seconds). The original recipe calls for soaking the beans in water overnight then cooking the beans in the sugary water the next day for a good minute. I went with a quick version using already cooked black beans from a can. This worked great for me and little Z who ate two servings, she loved it. When I asked her how she liked the beans she said “Those aren’t beans, their coconut”. J on the other hand knew they were beans and wasn’t a huge fan but I sort of expected that. She did say she loved the coconut milk though. On a hot Vegas day (107 degrees) by the pool, anything with a couple ice cubes in it hits the spot. Add some sweet coconut milk on ice and some Small Black on the turntable and we have ourselves a perfect Saturday afternoon.

Small Black Beans in Sweet Coconut Milk

Actual recipe here. It’s the black bean coconut recipe. Below is my quick and easy version.

Ingredients
1/2 c. water
pinch of sea salt
1 can black beans, rinsed super good (need to get off all that bean juice flavor)
1/4 c. honey
1/3 c. turbinado sugar
1 can (15 oz.) coconut milk, light will do
ice cubes
Preparation

Bring water, salt, honey and sugar to a boil dissolving all ingredients into the water. Take off heat and stir in coconut milk. Let cool for just a few minutes. Put a couple ice cubes into a small serving dish. Add a scoop of some beans and pour the sweet coconut milk over top. Cool remaining milk in fridge. You can use any beans in this really, red, white etc. I used small black beans for this article specifically. Eat with a spoon.
