The cutter makes great potato chips.

I came across several great finds the other day at the thrift store. The odd thing about them was they all were brown. Even the Bass loafers that I didn’t show here but they too were brown, yikes!

1.) A couple nice additions to the utensil drawer. A nice shaped soup spoon and a paring knife with wooden handle that I’ve been keeping my eye out for for awhile now. Found it!

2.) I’ve also been on the look out for a glass cutting board and I just so happened to find this one with retro graphics of cooking paraphernalia (yes I had to google that to spell it).

3.) Echo and the Bunnymen LP, Songs to Learn and Sing. I’ve never really given this band a chance but wow, this record is sweet. It’s a 1985 compilation of their past singles with one new single that was released on this record called Bring on the Dancing Horses.

4.) An old wooden mandolin slicer with stainless blades. You can adjust this sucker to super thin.

Blue cheese & walnut spread.

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

A rich flavored blue cheese spread that is uber good on apple/pear slices, french bread/sandwiches or crackers. We went with apples and it was delish. I tried it on a few crackers too and it was perfect. If you’re a fan of blue cheese you’ll love this spread. The original recipe calls for toasting the walnuts which you can do by tossing them into a 400 degree oven for a few minutes until you smell the nutty aromas being released or stove top in a dry skillet for a few minutes. I kept ours raw because we all know that heating foods only destroys the wonderful nutrients our bodies need, especially when these cheeses have so much flavor to begin with. Although toasting will make the walnuts much more flavorful. On a side note I have never tossed a little lemon juice with apples but not only does it prevent browning it also makes them taste amazing, like apple lemonade. This spread is so fast and easy to prepare you have no excuse not to try it.

Raw fruit and vegetable salad.

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Another raw whole food snack that is quick and easy. Basically the same as the cucumbers from the other day but more variety and the added bonus, fruit! It uses the same sour cream and dill mixture but this time adds a bit of creamed horseradish for some extra kick (optional). There were happy plates all around (I made Z’s version without the horseradish and J picked around the celery but I cleaned it all up like a good any good scavenger would).
